RedNote Slang: 6 Chinese Expressions Explained
Six expressions that can make a comment thread easier to follow. Read the surrounding sentence: slang communicates tone as well as literal meaning.

What these comments mean
种草
Literal meaning: planting grass. In context: a recommendation that makes someone want to try a product, place, or activity. Being 种草 means the idea has taken root; it does not necessarily mean a purchase has happened.
看了你的分享，我被这家咖啡店种草了。
“Your post made me want to try this café.”
Watch the context: the term can appear in everyday recommendations or marketing. It does not, by itself, prove that a post is sponsored. For an institutional example, Fujian’s tourism department describes its own creator-led Xiaohongshu tourism “种草” campaign.
避雷
Literal meaning: avoiding lightning. In context: avoiding something the writer found disappointing or problematic. In a review, “heads-up” or “one to avoid” may convey the tone better than a literal translation.
这双鞋磨脚，给大家避雷。
“These shoes rubbed my feet — a heads-up before you buy.”
Watch the context: an individual’s experience is not proof that something is a scam or unsafe for everyone. Check what happened, when it happened, and whether the details apply to you.
蹲
Literal meaning: squatting. In context: waiting here for something, such as an answer, tutorial, or follow-up. English equivalents include “following for the answer” or “waiting for the tutorial.”
蹲一个详细教程。
“Waiting for a detailed tutorial.”
Watch the context: this is a conversational signal. Typing the character does not itself activate a subscription or guarantee a notification. Use the app’s actual save or follow controls if you want to find the account or post again.
集美
In context: a playful form associated with 姐妹 (sisters), often addressing friends or an audience as “besties” or “girls.” It need not refer to biological sisters.
集美们，有没有舒服的通勤鞋推荐？
“Besties, any recommendations for comfortable commuting shoes?”
Watch the context: it is informal and often feminine-coded. You do not need to use it to fit in; a neutral greeting may suit an unfamiliar audience better. In a travel post, 集美 can also be a place name, so a dictionary-style substitution is not always right.
沉浸式
Meaning: immersive. It describes content that invites you into an experience, such as preparing a meal, packing a suitcase, or following a morning routine.
沉浸式整理书桌。
“An immersive desk-organizing session.”
Watch the context: some examples feature close-up sounds or ASMR, but the term does not require silence, whispering, or any particular soundtrack. It is a description of the experience, not a promise that the post will go viral.
求链接
Meaning: asking for the link. It can refer to a product, resource, tutorial, or another post. “Could you share the link?” is a natural English reading.
这个收纳盒好实用，求链接！
“That storage box looks useful — could you share the link?”
Watch the context: the comment shows interest, not a confirmed purchase. If you reply, make it clear what the link points to. A relevant answer or product name can also help when a direct link is unavailable.
Read the sentence, not just the keyword
A post titled “被种草后，我来避雷了” roughly means “I was persuaded to try it; now I’m back with a warning.” Both expressions appear, but the overall message is negative. A translator that spots only 种草 can miss that turn.
Start with who is speaking, what they tried, and whether they are asking, praising, joking, or complaining. If you are unsure, ask a short question instead of repeating slang whose tone you do not intend.
